OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF OPPOSITION

Gujarat Vidhansabha, Gandhinagar.

Press Note   09thAugust, 2010

* There is no proper disposal of rain water because of rampant corruption in infrastructure facilities.
* People should be provided water, food packets and milk at the time of crises.
* Corruption ridden government has not bothered even to visit flood affected areas.
* If Gujarat government had properly utilized the central funds for infrastructure there would have no water disposal problem

Recent rains have badly exposed the corruption in the infrastructure projects set up by the Gujarat government and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in Ahmedabad, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil said today. Rains turned most of parts of Ahmedabad into islands just in one night, he said.

Central government has given to Gujarat and Ahmedabad billions of rupees under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The money has not been properly used. Consequently, in little rains, people have to face great difficulty.

At the time of crisis, government should stand by people. However, even at such time, publicity hungry Chief Minister is busy flaunting himself. He made no arrangements to provide basic help of food packets, water and milk to people. Gohil recalled the time of Morbi disaster when the then Gujarat Chief Minister Babubhai Jashbhai himself had remained present there. He had run Gujarat from camp office in submerged Morbi, he said. Despite such an excellent tradition, Gujarat Chief Minister did not go to flood affected places. Gujarat government has shown utter indifference to the problem of water logging in the low lying areas. Gohil demanded immediate relief and cash doles to affected people. Government should also give compensation to farmers for the loss due to rains, he further demanded.
