OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF OPPOSITION
Gujarat Vidhansabha, Gandhinagar.
Press Note                                                        Dt. 14-06-2010

• Gujarat Chief Minister had signed in April 2008 MOU with Union Carbide ( now Dow Chemicals) the company responsible for the Bhopal tragedy.
• Release of copy of letter of Dow Chemicals exposes nexus between Chief Minister and the company responsible for Bhopal tragedy.
• Gujarat Chief Minister had on 4/1/2007 cleared a proposal to bring 356 tones of toxic waste to Gujarat from MP.
• BJP leaders who have trained guns at the central leaders should seek an explanation of Gujarat CM.
• Dow Chemicals has written a letter to the central government seeking help citing that Gujarat government has signed MOU with them.

Gujarat Chief Minister has committed a crime of offering a red carpet to the Union Carbide company, which is now called Dow Chemicals, responsible for the Bhopal tragedy. Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly, Shaktisinh Gohil today released a copy of a letter of 1/10/2008. In this letter the company has written that it signed an MOU with Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd in April 2008. The MOU was signed by the Chief Minister.
He said that BJP leaders have launched a smear campaign that Chidambaram and Kamalnath had favoured Dow Chemicals. However, in its letter, Dow Chemicals has sought the government help claiming that it has signed MOU with Gujarat and the deal would bring money to Gujarat. These BJP leaders should ask their own chief minister about his joining hands with the Dow Chemicals.
Why did the Chief Minister acted as a spokesman of the company after signing MoUs. It is very clear from the letter of the Dow company that neither any state government nor the union government was ready to partner with Dow. In such a situation why did the Gujarat Government partnered with the company in April 2008. The CM who is making all kind of statements about Bhopal in Bihar is silent about his association with Dow. Dow had refused to dispose off the poisonous waste of Union Carbide after the Bhopal tragedy and the Gujarat government has tied up with such a company. Why is the CM giving red carpet welcome to the company due to which hundreds of people have lost their lives?

Union Carbide (now Dow Chemicals) had sought the state government’s permission to bring hazardous waste from Madhya Pradesh to Gujarat through a letter dated 8.10.2006 and permission was given to Dow company for it on 4.1.2007 without thinking about the people of Gujarat. What is the reason for sudden love of CM towards anti Gujarat lobby and industrialists particularly Dow?

Due to efforts of active NGOs and environment protection committee in the state people became aware of this fact and the state government was forced to cancel the permission on 4/10/2008. This proves that Modi is shedding crocodile tears on Bhopal gas tragedy but in reality when the entire country was up in arms against Union Carbide Modi and the BJP leaders were shaking hands with them.
