OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF OPPOSITION

Gujarat Vidhansabha, Gandhinagar.

Press Note                                                                           21st March, 2011

Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil said today that the Health Minister’s statement in the House exposed the fact that the negligent administration caused death of four infants who were administered vaccine for measles last week. Gohil said that this was quite clear from the admission of the Health Minister that AEFI centers were not set up while undertaking the vaccination exercise. He pointed out that as per the norms of WHO and government of India AEFI centers should be set up. Gohil had asked whether these centers were set up or not. These centers are necessary because Anaphylytic shocks are caused at times as reaction. Congress MLA Babu Meghji Shah said that the statement of the Minister was totally wrong. Had these children be kept they would have got medical attention and care at right time.

Referring to state government’s written reply that it was not responsible for the incident Gohil asked if that was the case then why a junior pharmacist, staff nurse and helper were suspended.  To shield senior officers the junior ones have been sacrificed. He said that there was no problem with the vaccine and vaccine of same batch was sent to various hospitals in the country annot a single case was reported.
